Oxfam Sierra Leone
Civil war raged in Sierra Leone for 11 tragic and bloody years from 1991 – 2002, leaving devastated communities and a shattered infrastructure. Many of the physical scars of war still remain evidenced by discared military tanks and burnt out buildings, poor roads, housing and sanitation. Brutal weapons of war, such as rape, amputations, abductions and forcing children to fight as soldiers has also left a far deeper emotional scar.
Oxfam’s programme in Sierra Leone focuses mainly on governance, gender, public health and village savings and loans schemes with the aim of moving from a humanitarian response to a development phase. Oxfam is also developing a programme to reduce Sexual Exploitation and Abuse in Sierra Leone.
