Uganda: Educating a Nation

Rafiki Thabo Foundation works with local people in the Kabale District of Uganda to support students in secondary schools, universities and teacher training colleges to complete their studies. They also work in communities in Kenya and Lesotho.

Student Life

At many schools students have to pay for food, uniform and books as well as school fees even if they go to a public, government-funded school. Students who fail their exams are not allowed to graduate to the next year and have to repeat. Therefore, it is common to have young people of different ages studying in the same class.

School Lunch

Many students go hungry at lunchtime because they cannot afford to eat, especially if their father or mother has died or is ill and can no longer work. Sadly HIV is still common and there is often stigmatism attached to it, making it hard for students to talk about their problems and seek support from their teachers.

Day to Day Life

The majority of people living in Kabale District do not have running water or electricity and grow their own food to eat or sell, to support their families.
